Strolling in Caobian Village: Encountering the Leisurely Time of a Centennial Ancient Village

On the morning of May 22, 2025, the gentle sunlight spilled over the streets and alleys of Zhuhai. With anticipation for distant places, I set off on a journey to Caobian Village in Zhongshan. Departing from Zhuhai, the scenery along the way was like a flowing scroll, constantly changing. The breeze outside the car window carried a fresh aroma, making me increasingly eager for the ancient village ahead.

After more than an hour, I finally arrived at Caobian Village. At the entrance of the village, an ancient banyan tree stood like a silent watchman. Its huge canopy shaded the sky, and the drooping aerial roots swayed gently in the breeze, as if telling the village's long stories. Stepping into the village, underfoot were winding stone paths. Each stone slab was polished smooth by time, interlacing and extending to every corner, leading me to explore the village's secrets.

The first thing that caught my eye was a building with a distinct Nanyang style—Caobian School. Built in 1929, this school was funded and constructed by overseas Chinese like Liang Guanzhao. It is a two-story brick-concrete structure in a "hui" (loop)-shaped layout, with a bright atrium in the center where sunlight pours in. Standing in front of the school, I imagined the scene of students studying here in the past, their loud reading voices seeming to echo in my ears. Although no longer used for teaching, the school now serves as a community library and office for the Caobian Economic Association, still exuding a strong cultural atmosphere.

Continuing along the stone path, several tall watchtowers came into view. These watchtowers were built by overseas Chinese in the past to protect their fellow villagers from bandits. Standing amid the fields in front of the village, they remain solid and upright despite years of wind and rain. The mottled walls bear clear traces of time, silently recounting that turbulent history and filling me with admiration for the wisdom and courage of our ancestors.

In the village, I also found many well-preserved Cantonese-style residences. These houses are neatly arranged, with blue bricks and gray tiles, and exquisite wood, brick, and stone carvings—every detail showcasing the unique charm of Lingnan architecture. Pushing open a slightly ajar wooden door, a kind-hearted grandmother warmly invited me in. She told me that these old houses hold the memories of generations, and they are reluctant to leave, always guarding this precious home. After chatting with her for a long time, listening to her stories about village life and the past, I deeply felt the strong human warmth and daily life atmosphere in Caobian Village.

The Wuhou Temple in the village also left a deep impression on me. First built in the Qing Dynasty, the temple was rebuilt multiple times in 1879 (the fifth year of the Guangxu reign), 1919, and 1986, enshrining figures like Zhuge Liang, Weituo, Hua Tuo, Guanyin, and Guan Yu. Facing east, the temple has a hard mountain roof, a Bogu ridge, plain green tiles, green-glazed eaves, brick walls, and a post-and-lintel wooden structure, exuding a solemn atmosphere. Two steles in the temple record its reconstruction history; the regular script carved in black hemp stone remains legible despite years of erosion.

Unknowingly, the sun gradually set, and a beautiful sunset painted the sky. I strolled along the country path, breathing in the fragrance of mixed soil and grass, watching the distant mountains dyed orange-red, and the rice ears in the paddy fields swaying gently in the breeze, creating golden ripples as if the whole world was covered in a dreamy veil. At this moment, my heart was無比 (extremely) calm, as if all troubles had been thrown far away.

This trip to Caobian Village was like a dialogue with history and a baptism of the soul. Every brick, tile, plant, and tree here carries the memories of time and the wisdom of our ancestors. Caobian Village, this century-old ancient village hidden in the depths of time, has charmed me with its unique allure, allowing me to appreciate the profoundness of Lingnan traditional culture and find a peaceful haven in my busy life. I think I will definitely set foot on this land again to continue my story with it.
