Before I started writing daily in English, I felt very bored while swimming. However, since I began this practice, I have found a good method to combine both activities. While swimming, I start writing my diary in my mind. In the evening, after finishing all my tasks, I can quickly transcribe my thoughts.Today is my mother’s 81st birthday. Both my parents were born in rural areas of Xiangxiang, Hunan. My father was born in 1934, and they married in 1964. I was born in 1965, their first child, and I have two sisters. Before I turned 10, my mother and sisters mostly lived with my father in the city, while I stayed with my grandmother in the rural area of Xiangxiang. We loved each other deeply. My grandmother passed away in October 1985.My father’s family was very poor, and he was the youngest child. He studied hard and achieved a higher education at university. After graduating, he started working in Changchun. In 1972, he moved his job from LuoYang to Huangshi so that his children can live in the city and receive better education. At that time, our family was very poor because only my father had a job, yet he had to support six people: my grandmother, my mother, us three children, and himself. We often lacked money to buy sufficient good food. However, my father believed that good health was essential. He planted vegetables and raised chickens and ducks to improve our lives. Sometimes, he also caught small fish and shrimp in the river. Although we were poor, my sisters and I grew up strong and healthy.I remember summers when my father taught us to swim while my mother stayed home, cooking delicious meals and waiting for us. Sometimes, we would go to the Changjiang River to swim. When it rained, we would submerge our heads, and the raindrops hitting the surface sounded like drums. Despite our poverty, our childhood was happy. We didn’t have new clothes, but my mother made them for us herself during the New Year.My father passed away in 2023 at the age of 89. Now, my mother lives in a nursing home in Huangshi. We have hired a caregiver who looks after her exclusively. My sister visits the nursing home twice or three a week to see our mother. Today, during their lunch celebrating mother’s birthday, my sister share some pictures. I saw that my mother is very happy with her caregiver in the nursing home. I am grateful to all the people who have given my mother a happy life.
