She was born into a farming family in Jixian, Hebei (now Hengshui), and from a young age, took up her studies and became involved in the revolutionary movement.</p><p class="ql-block">Her life spanned a remarkable chapter of China’s modern history—from the final years of the Republic through to the era of Reform and Opening. She witnessed, and in her own way participated in, many of the profound changes that shaped the nation.</p><p class="ql-block">Having worked for many years in the field of writing and editing, she continued to write even after her retirement in 1984. Over the years she produced nearly a million words, though the vast majority of her writing was devoted to recording the lives of others. It was only at our gentle insistence that she began to set down her own story.</p><p class="ql-block">Despite her advancing years and waning strength, she persevered—writing when she could, and gradually setting down several hundred thousand words. Sadly, she passed away before she could complete the work. Yet it was something she never let go of. In truth, finishing her memoir was her final wish.</p><p class="ql-block">On behalf of our generation, I have taken on the task of compiling her manuscripts and photographs, with the hope that we might, in this space, help her final wish come to fruition.</p><p class="ql-block">The name of this site is taken from her earlier names. Yisu was the name she bore as a child; Shi Ming was the name she chose for herself after joining the revolution. Together, they form a quiet but enduring image: Yisu carved in stone.</p><p class="ql-block">Perhaps owing to her profession, our mother was in the habit of taking and preserving many photographs over the course of her life. These pictures have become invaluable records of the world she lived in. We hope to share them here, believing that they will offer a more vivid understanding of her story.</p><p class="ql-block">Her manuscripts are still being sorted. Much of the later material was jotted down on scraps of newspaper or the blank pages of magazines, often crossed out and re-written, sometimes barely legible. My intention is to transcribe and organise the work gradually—one portion at a time. Errors will no doubt occur along the way, and I ask for your patience and understanding.</p><p class="ql-block">Above all, I hope that all friends, family, and anyone who knew her—even briefly—might consider sharing a memory, however small.
